Are discount membership schemes worth it?

Blue Light Card, TOTUM, UNiDAYS and Student Beans all unlock discounts — if you qualify. Here’s who each is for, what they cost, and whether they actually pay for themselves.

Eligibility rules, fees and partner lists change often — the figures below were correct at the time of writing, so always confirm on the official site before you join.

What these schemes actually are

They’re eligibility-based discount memberships. Instead of being open to everyone (like a cashback site), you prove you belong to a group — a student, or an emergency-services/NHS/social-care/armed-forces worker — and in return you get member-only discounts at a list of partner retailers. The discount is usually a percentage off at checkout, often via a unique code or a verified account.

The free student ones: UNiDAYS & Student Beans

  • UNiDAYS — free for verified students. Strong on fashion, tech and food, with codes you generate in the app or site and paste at checkout.
  • Student Beans — also free for verified students, with a heavily overlapping but not identical partner list. Because both are free, the sensible move is to hold both and check each for the retailer you’re buying from.

Verdict: if you’re a student, these are a no-brainer — zero cost, so there’s no break-even to worry about.

TOTUM (the paid student card)

TOTUM (formerly the NUS extra card) is the paid option for students. There’s a limited free tier, but the headline discounts sit behind a paid membership sold in 1, 2 or 3-year terms. It leans into different partners from the free apps — some food, travel and high-street names — so the question is simply whether the discounts you’ll actually use beat the membership fee.

Verdict: worth it only if you can name two or three partners you’ll genuinely use that aren’t already covered free by UNiDAYS or Student Beans. Otherwise start with the free apps.

Blue Light Card (emergency services, NHS, care & forces)

Blue Light Card is for people working in the emergency services, NHS, social care and the armed forces. It charges a small one-off fee for a multi-year membership and unlocks a large list of retailer, holiday and day-out discounts, both online and in-store.

Verdict: because the fee is small and covers a couple of years, it usually pays for itself on a single decent online order — if you’re eligible, it’s one of the best-value memberships going.

So — are they worth it?

  • Free schemes (UNiDAYS, Student Beans): yes, if you qualify. No downside.
  • Paid schemes (TOTUM, Blue Light Card): yes if the discounts you’ll really use clear the fee — which Blue Light Card usually does on one order, and TOTUM does only if it covers partners the free apps don’t.
  • The trap: paying for a card and then forgetting to use it. Only join the paid ones if you have a near-term purchase in mind.

Where membership discounts fit the stack

A membership discount is just one layer. On the right purchase you can often combine it with a discounted gift card and cashback on top — though watch the order and the small print, because some member portals and some cashback clicks don’t combine. Our order-to-stack guide and the full stacking method show how to sequence them so nothing cancels out.
